How To Get Rid Of Bulky Trash Items.

Cat on couch 08-14-14

Pop Quiz: You bought a new couch and you want to dispose of the old, beat-up one that your cat destroyed. What do you do?

a)      Drag the old couch into the woods behind your house.

b)      Leave it on the curb and pray that somebody takes it.

c)       Drop it into the Oakland Estuary, hoping to create a coral reef.

d)      Jam it in a woodchipper, expecting it to shred into a neat, little pile you can toss in your trashcan.

e)      Contact Waste Management of Alameda County to schedule a bulky waste pickup.

Do I really need to tell you that the correct answer is e?

By contacting Waste Management of Alameda County, you can schedule an appointment to have someone come to your home and safely remove the old couch. As an Oakland resident, you may even be eligible for a free annual pickup. If you have other items you want to rid your home of as well, you can also inquire about renting a dumpster.

So, if you have bulky waste you want to dispose of, please call Waste Management of Alameda County at 510-613-8710 to confirm that they can take your item(s), learn about their services and rates, and schedule to have your couch and other items properly removed. You can also visit their website: www.wm.com.

If you have items that you want to haul away yourself, you can contact the Davis Street Transfer Station at 510-638-2303 (www.dsgardencenter.com) or the City of Berkeley Transfer Station at 510-981-7270 (www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/transferstation) to learn about the kinds of items they accept, rates, drop-off location, and available drop-off times.

How do you get rid of stuff if you live in an apartmnt more then 4 units?

    • Eric Saltmarsh November 6, 2015 at 7:42 am #

Hi, Toya. Thanks for asking. I suggest you contact Waste Management of Alameda County at 510-613-8710 and ask them if you could schedule a special pick-up. My understanding is that you have to be an Oakland resident to receive the services, but not necessarily a homeowner. They can also advise you of other options, if that doesn’t work.

Alternatively, you can go to the Waste Management website, http://www.wm.com, click on the icon ‘request a bulk pickup,’ and complete the short form, providing details about the items to be picked up and their location. I hope that helps.

      Regards,

      Eric
