The City of Detroit is the 2015 winner of the GRO1000 community garden grant, awarded by ScottsMiracle-Gro and GRO1000. Receiving 55% of the votes, The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is being awarded a $40,000 grant to create a new children’s sensory garden, designed to provide a hands-on classroom for local youth to experience nature firsthand, using their five senses.
The Lowell Family Market Farm in West Oakland was one of three other contestants for this award. Each runner-up community will receive a $1,500 grant and product donation from ScottsMiracle-Gro. Congratulations to all the participants.
We applaud ScottsMiracle-Gro’s efforts to create 1,000 community gardens by 2018 (the company’s 150th birthday) and we encourage other companies to consider ways to support community gardens in West Oakland and other Oakland communities.
Keeping Oakland Beautiful is everybody’s business.
